How to Kill Your Community…

Posted by RealDaffyDuck on April 30, 2010

I was perusing some blogs from the WordPress team, and came across a post of advice from one of the team members, appropriately named: 4 STEPS TO KILL YOUR COMMUNITY.

Really, just one of them stuck out particularly, when thinking of the many mistakes Kenny did with his ill-fated blog. Can you think of any more?

Don’t Moderate. Allow anybody to post anything regardless of whether it contributes to the conversation or not. Stupidity, libel, hate, curse words are all okay because in the comments you have plausible deniability. Make sure people know that whatever they post will live forever, and anything goes. The few smart people you did have in your comments will enjoy responding to these folks. Advertisers love being next to a good fight, too.

Be Famous! You’ll get thousands of comments on almost everything you post and make sure only to let through the most sycophantic and saccharine, don’t tolerate real conversation or debate. To spice it up every now and then opine on a known controversial subject like abortion and let your audience loose on each other like gladiators while you watch from the stands.

Don’t Ask Anything of Your Audience. No polls, surveys, or open-ended blog entries. What do thoseplebes know anyway?

Bonus:

Lie to Your Readers. Don’t Worry About Ethical Integrity. They don’t actually care what you write so don’t worry about being honest, truthful or upfront with them. Definitely never disclose anything or be transparent. And don’t be afraid to post press releases as though they were your actual words. That’s a great way to kill your sense of community and authenticity!

Hey, that’s only 4! Surely BBK broke the other 2 rules too.

And I would just like to add a heartfelt AMEN with regard to the first cardinal sin listed.

    Kenny who?

There was a post on the bbk site which he quickly took down just after he was interviewed on the radio. The last line said something like “is this the age of the celebrity blogger.” In poker terms no one ever lost money betting on how big a douche Kenny is.

  4. This one?

Yesterday the producers of the John and Ken show on KFI 640 AM contacted me about an on-air live interview.

    I agreed.

The John and Ken show is a popular nationally syndicated conservative radio show that plays during drive home time.

    Here’s the podcast.

Click on the 5PM ‘Tax Revolt’ segment for 4/19. Once the stream loads, the interview starts at the 20 minute mark of the program.

Originally, the show’s producer’s said the interview would last for 10 minutes but it actually ran for about 30 minutes.
