adman: Some Flood Observations

Posted by BigDummyKenny on November 12, 2011

The past few days the good news has been about the floodwater’s going down in certain areas of the city. Around Ladprao, Mo Chit and the weekend market. Watching the nightly updates and reading the new reports it’s easy for someone to get the impression the worst of the flooding is behind the city.

I disagree. What is being played down is that more areas around the city continue flood. Flooding has reached the Airport Link train stop at Huamark station and On Nut road is flooding.

True that water is not moving straight down from the north any longer. However it is now encroaching from the east. The big bag flood wall has caused the water to flow that way, overwhelming the flood control system on that side of the city and making it’s way west and south from there.

Venturing out near flooded areas around the city I noted the smell is terrible. There are rats having a feast on the garbage which can’t be collected.

You may have recalled many Thais complaining about the tap water but not so much recently. This is not to say the problem has gone away. In quite a few places inside the central part of the city the water is not clean. A Thai friend tole me about yellow water when taking a shower and I have overheard others say the same.

Some hotels have made drinking water available in the lobby. The government is doing their part by making purified water available throughout various parts of the city.

The only rat I’ve ever seen in Bangkok was this June and he walking on two legs with a big boxjaw gookamonkey face and an Nikon camera slung around his shoulder. I can’t say I saw him eating garbage, though I did see him hanging around Hanrahan’s complaining about the price of bottled water while he was using their free internet. Cheap Charlie bastard.
